Ketchup With Us #25 – By Candlelight

Ms Mel and ODNTare asking about your most memorable birthday, which may be just a way for them to ask your birthday so they can buy (or make, with glitter, paste and racamoni) you a card. Ketchup With Us

I’ve always had fun birthdays. This particular series of events over the course of several days though…takes the cake. Yep I said it!

________________

My birthday May 30th 1998 – I took two finals, aced ‘em. Homemade birthday cupcakes that night. The next morning, I aced another final, power napped, baked an epic batch of PB choco chip cookies, then out to celebrate with friends to TGIFridays and a concert (Garbage). June 1st – I graduated! I arrived late, like a boss.

Ketchup With Us #24: Perfect The First Timing

Ms Mel and ODNT want to know about a significant first day in your life … of school, work, parenthood, rehab, veganism, prison, whatever you want – in 57 woids or less. Ketchup With Us

Not only is the timing of this prompt just about perfect, the incident has that element as well 😉

August 14, 2003- New job! My boss (also her first day – revamped department) admits she doesn’t get along with computers. It’s a busy day as we set up; later everyone is chatting and she gently bumps my monitor. The lights go out at that instant. “What did I do?!” Yep, the Northeast blackout – my boss caused it.

Ketchup With Us #23: At Rest

Ms Mel and ODNT knwo that a picture is worth 57 words. Easiest link-up ever. All we want is a picture. Give us your best bi***/a**hole resting face. Ketchup With Us

So I am looking through my photos and though I do smile a lot, yeap there they are!
The beard does accentuate the expression.Through the years:
rrrrtz3
2008 – I was feeling artsy on a sunny morning. Notice no beard yet!

2009 – My friend’s wedding. I was definitely, ahem, ‘at rest’. Once they fired up the 80’s music though…

Last Fall:
sammiches
Part of a class project – eat at a food-place-ery of a cuisine you’ve never had.
For me – Malaysian sandwiches. Everyone laffed at my expression, now I know why!
Despite my expression, that sammich was awesome.
Ok you want to see the sammich don’t you…

What’s a train ride delayed on the bridge mean? Selfie time.
I’m serious, everyone does this.

Double Bonus: At the time I was organizing this post, I took a break for lunch and ran into an old friend while wlking down the street. The first thing she asked me “What’s wrong? You look, I don’t know…” Had to laugh at that one.

Ketchup With Us #22 – The Ups & Downs in Life

Ms Mel and ODNT want you to tell us about the time you rode a literal or figurative rollercoaster, lived by the edge of your seat, when something scared the holy living carp out of you, or that time you played an epic 2 hour long round of chutes and ladders. Ketchup With Us

My first time on the world famous1 Cyclone, located in Coney Island, Brooklyn…

_______

I went, knowing one bit of important advice: eat2 AFTER the Cyclone, not before3. What we didn’t realize is that anything in your breast pocket will fly out, which, using some previously unknown Spidey- level reflexes, I plucked a Metrocard out of the air on the second drop. Unfortunately, the cameras are set on the first!4

Ketchup With Us #18: Those Lazy Crazy Hazy Days

Ms Mel and ODNT want to know what’s on your summer reading list, so that everyone can see it and we can all read those books and start a reading circle, which is an awesome excuse to get together and uncork some wine (though I have had some good screwtops!). As though you need a reason… Ketchup With Us

It’s May already?! (the 5th Month), start making plans for building Castles in beach dunes, playing games in the backyard,  BBQing, then watching stars at night – it’s almost magical. Know that many days remain before the autumn harvests and winter in the city.

And download/ pick up a copy of Carrie Rubin’s The Seneca Scourge.

A relative from the ‘burbs suspected our favorite Italian restaurant was a certain type of ‘family owned’. So I called him up April 1st, that ‘you were right!” an incident, right out of the Godfather, had just taken place and was all over the news. His concern was where he would get veal marsala from now on.

Ketchup With Us 14 – Just More of Me to Love!

Ms Mel and ODNT are often imitated/never duplicated, and they want to know, in 57 words or less, who your doppleganger is. Ketchup With Us

I’ll take you on a photo journey if I have comparable pictures. These photos are mine, so I didn’t bother with clipart from websites – it’s Friday, KWU is almost over and I don’t feel like giving credits.

Ketchup With Us #13: Sole Man

Ms Mel and ODNT want to know whose shoes would you like to walk in for a day? Ketchup With Us

For one day each I would walk in:

-The worn out shoes of those less fortunate, so I can be humbled by need.

-The high end shoes of the fortuned, to realize what money can and cannot buy.

-The shoes of a random annoying jackoff, so I’ll know what it feels like to jump off a cliff.

Ketchup With Us #12 – To Serve Manly

Ms Mel and ODNT are exotic, intoxicating, and make life more interesting* – and they want to know In 57 words or less, tell us about the best drink you ever had. Recipes and pictures are encouraged. Ketchup With Us

Though there are some memorable drinks I have shared with some of you, this story stood out for. Back before I had favorite wines, brands of Gin, or dedicated time to extensive ‘research’ for cheap strong drinks at any divey place the best happy hours (plural), I would just drink whatever wines were available, or if cocktails were insisted, a Malibu Bay Breeze.

I can confirm that this happened once; a second incident is… sort of hazy.

___________
Bartender– Measure Malibu Rum, OJ, and pineapple/ cranberry juice in a glass with ice. Stir. Loudly exclaim, “Here’s your MANLY drink, sir!”, so that all can mock and jeer (they are friends/ family and will not).

Drinker– Take the drink. Order another. Insist on getting everyone else’s drinks during the event. Leave nothing as a tip.
___________

*I left out the full-bodied innuendo. This is a family blog**.

**No it isn’t.

Ketchup With Us #10: Commuticating

Ms Mel and ODNT know that they are the bright spots of everyone’s day, but what about those drastically less awesome aspects of your routine? In 57 words or less, tell us about WHO (or WHAT) you go head to head with every day. Ketchup With Us

_______________

Monday through Friday, I face NYC’s bus and subway system. Besides the MTA’s chaotic schedule, commuters stalk entire cars for empty seats, pouncing like vultures playing ‘musical carrion’. I am unsympathetic to sick passengers delaying my commute, people asking for help, and kids who should be in class dancing around for tips. Still… I’m a good person.
